Mrs. Chandler's Science Class

Science Syllabus

Grading Scale

Students will be graded in a variety of ways including formal assessments such as tests/quizzes/daily work, and authentic assessments using rubrics for presentations, projects, and written assignments. Students will be encouraged to self-evaluate their work and evaluate their peers’ work. Grading is done on a total points system. Students will be provided an excellent student sample for each major writing/project assignment.

Absent Work

  • It is your responsibility to check Google Classroom to see what you missed when you were absent in order to complete and and submit any missing work.
  • Any work missed is expected to be submitted consistent with the number of days missed (for example, if you are absent three days, you have three days to make up and turn in that missing work). Anything turned in after that deadline is late!

Late Work

Remember, this is junior high school. No one is in charge of your work except you! So, be responsible and turn things in on time. Assignments turned in over a week late are scored a ZERO.

Plagiarism

There is a zero-tolerance policy for any work submitted that is plagiarized. Plagiarism is a form of dishonesty that occurs when a person passes off someone else’s work as their own. This can include failing to cite an author for her/his ideas or quotes, cutting and pasting (o typing) paragraphs from different websites, and handing in a paper downloaded from the internet. All are plagiarism. If you share your homework, essay, etc. with another student and they plagiarize it, you are considered guilty.

Extra Credit

In order to ensure a favorable grade, students should put maximum effort into everyday class assignments (example: always using complete sentences, showing effort on bell work/quick-write activities, double-checking grammar and reading over responses). I do not give extra credit to any student that is missing assignments. Small extra credit opportunities will be offered to all students periodically throughout the year.

Attendance

As with in person instruction, attendance is expected and will be closely monitored in a virtual environment. Attendance EAs will continue to track attendance and make phone calls home to inquire why the scholar was not logged into their synchronous classroom or have not posted required work into the Google classroom. Attendance EAs will work closely with the district attendance coordinators who, in turn, will remain engaged in the Attendance Team meetings at the building level ensuring that these continue regardless of the method of instruction.

Attendance will be taken every morning in homeroom. Students are expected to be logged in to the system by 8:15. Period attendance will also be taken with each class. Students that log in 8 minutes or more after a class begins will be marked tardy. Students with three or more absences or three or more tardies will result in a phone call/message home.
